Natural Disasters and Illness

The death toll from the earthquake in Haiti is rising.  Many people lost their homes and are living in makeshift tent cities.  People are in such close quarters, disease and illness is spreading.

Read the following article found on the SF Chronicle's websiteIncreasing deaths from illness in Haiti by Frank Bajak of the Associated Press

Why do natural disasters cause so much death afterwards?  What is causing people to die now, weeks after the earthquake?  What can we do to prevent this from occuring?  What can you do to prepare for a natural disaster?

  1. Natural disasters cause so much death after the initial effects because there is little food and water left to be found which leads to violence. Also infants that are being born are not given the correct vaccinations in time, and are dying like Abigail Charlot. Weeks after the earthquake there is still a shortage in food and not enough security. To prepare for a major disaster such as this, we need to have a plan, perhaps food storage, and we need to have enough security to ensure the safety of everyone after the disaster is over.

  2. Natural disasters are simply dreadful to the human race and take the most human lives during and after the impact, such as the earthquake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12 2010. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0, the most powerful to hit Haiti in a century. Even after the earthquake, diseases and infections lurk among the remains of the fallen country known as Haiti. With the aftermath being as catastrophic as the impact it’s self, people are being jammed into camps where contagious-diseases are a brink away and health officials fear the worst. The UN should re-enforce the health code and try to keep people segregated in order to avoid an epidemic and take more life’s in or around Haiti. We can only hope for the best in our region and prepare well for the most common type of disasters around the area that we live in. Life is precious and we must value it, disasters creep and can attack at any time!

  3. Natural disasters cause so much death afterwards because the pediatrics don't always arrive in time so people die of malnutrition and the spread of infections and illnesses. There are outbreaks because children aren't being vaccinated. To prevent this, the victims of the natural disaster need long term care and clean, healthy environments to stay in. There always needs to be a plan of safety in case of a natural disaster.

  4. Natural disasters cause a great amount of death afterwards for many reasons. One of those reasons is because there aren't that many supplies for the people in need, causing them to get sicker. Another reason is because there is a limited amount of medical aid around which means people are more easily infected and can get a lot more sicker than the usual. With help from other countries people try to bring more medical aid to lessen the death rate.

  5. Sometimes the aftermath of a natural disaster can lead to more deaths than the actual natural disaster itself. Aftershocks of earthquakes can lead to more deaths. Also, carbon monoxide poisoning is common after a natural disaster, because of the dust that is created when building fall. Also, even if you survive an earthquake, you might be injured, with many cuts and bruises on your body. This gives viruses and bacteria a way to enter your body easily, so people can get sick easily after a natural disaster. Finally, starvation killed many people in Haiti, because there is very little food left after the earthquake. To prepare for a natural disaster, there should be first aid backup kits available with antibiotics, as well as extra food to prevent starvation.

  6. The reason so many people are dying afer the earthquake is because of the cuts on people. This gives bacteria an easy spot to enter the body. It is very hard to stop this because the conditions are dirty so it is hard to keep a cut from being infected. If there immune systems are weak from not eating the second line of defense will have a hard time fighting off the pathogens. Also people are in cramped spaces so if one person is sick they could get the majority of the camp sick. Well this is not the only reason that people dying it is a main reason for the people dying of sicknesses. Some people are dying of starvation because of lack of food.

  7. Natural disasters cause a lot of death afterwards because during the disasters people could have been injured. When they are injured and live in poor countries they are unable to receive the right medical attention so they are left to care for themselves. People are dying weeks after the quake because the people who are injured are not receiving the help they need to get better so they are just getting worse and dying. Also they people who do get medical help need to keep their infected area clean but it is hard to do that when you live on the street where there is a lot of bacteria. Also when there is limited space they tend to cram people in small areas so viruses and bacteria are able to spread easy. Also they are limited on food so since there health is already bad from there injury, when they get dehydrated and hungry it makes their situation worse. How we can prevent this from occurring is if more medical treatment went there to help the people keep their injuries clean, taken care of, and treated right. What I could do to get ready for a natural disaster is to make sure somewhere in the house there is a kit ready full of medical things, clothes and food.

  8. Even weeks after the widely-talked about Haiti natural disaster, many people are dying- even when they survived the actual earthquake. This is due to the lack of preparation. They do not have enough water, food, or supplies set aside to survive even if they survive the natural disaster itself. Many people do not expect a natural disaster to happen to them, and do not think to prepare for one. To prevent this from occuring, it is a good idea to be prepared. For example, my family has water, food, clothes, tents, medical kits, etc. set aside in case a natural disaster strikes the bay area. It is a good idea that everyone is well-prepared for anything that may come along.

  9. This week in class we learned about the immune system of the human body and how the body defends itself against harmful bacteria and diseases. The death toll in Haiti has risen to 230,000 people. The cause of multiple deaths is due to the infections caused by minor injuries. Poor countries without vaccinations or antibiotics has higher death tolls because many of the peoples immune systems are weak due to the lack of exposure to small diseases. Due to the unexposure, the bodies immune system can not create antibodies quickly enough to get rid of the harmful bacteria and viruses. This relates to what we are learning in class because we learned about how the body protects itself from lethal infections.

  10. When natural disasters happen, many get injured with cuts, etc. The cuts are openings which allow bacteria to enter their body. Since the Haiti incident is very large this happens to large masses of people. Since it is in a pooer country, their medical procedures may not be too sanitary. Also, people are in cramped areas with many people, so, if one is sick it is probable that the rest may get sick at some point as well. To prepare a plan should be instated.

  11. People generally get hurt or die in a serious natural disaster. An earthquake like the one Haiti left rubble to fall on people. Dead bodies can be infected with bacteria and living people can be infected with viruses and bacteria through open cuts and wounds. This can lead to death way after the actual earthquake. We can cover up wounds to stop transmission of disease. But if a natural disaster does come, we should have first aid kits and food and water at home.

  12. Natural disasters cause a large death toll afterwards because many people lose their homes and access to food or water. Along with starvation and dehydration, people are forced to live on the streets or in small, cramped places with many other people. If people have injuries that they can't get treated, it will probably get infected, possibly causing them to die. People can also get sick from being on the street and in such closed areas. Diseases get passed around from being so close, and since there is little medical attention or sanitation, it can cause people to die. We can prepare for natural disasters by keeping first aid kits, a water supply, and lots of medical attention given to victims.

  13. Natural Disasters cause so much death afterwards because, people lose their homes and they can get seriously injured by the disaster or after. The community also gets affected. People can't work anymore, which means they don't have money for food, water, or basic essential things to survive. Since people don't have homes to live in, they have to live on the streets and diseases can spread easily from people to people. If people have any cuts, bacteria can very easily infect it and cause people to die. More people are dyeing after the Earthquake because, they don't have food or water to keep themselves healthy to survive. Also not everyone can get treated or taken care of because there isn't enough medical attention for everyone. We have all been taught the ways to prepare for a major disaster. Storing plenty of food and water in a safe place is one way. Keeping an aid box with bandages and disinfectants in a safe place is another way to keep your self heathy and prepared for a natural disaster. The only problem is that, not everyone takes the time to do this. Lots of people are just lazy to keep a safety kit full of things to survive and once a natural disaster occurs its to late to do anything.

  14. Natural disasters cause so much death after, because there is little to no food to feed people and also because many of the victim’s homes have been crushed down so they are forced to live on the streets which are not sanitary. As well as pregnant mothers are still giving birth so the new born infants are not able to be given the right medication to survive in time, just like Abigail Charlot. And still weeks after the earth quake people are still dying because of the shortage of food. To be able to prepare for a disaster such as this giant earthquake we need to have a lot of people willing to fly over at anytime and supply food and water and set up homes for people who have lost theirs

  15. The earthquake in Haiti caused so many deaths because there is little access to food and water. People can only live 3 days without water, if there is no sanitary water available, there is no way for people to survive. Many families were separated, this made it hard for the young children in the family to survive because they didn't have their parents or guardians to provide for them. Many people were also injured, it's hard for people to survive without medical care and there was little medical care available after the earthquake hit.

  16. Natural disasters eliminate many lives directly, but the disaster's aftermath often contributes greatly to the number of casualties in the area it struck. Those that survive these disasters are often left injured and weak, thus very suseptible to infection of viruses and bacteria. The people affected are often unable to take proper care of themselves because their resources -the area's buildings that sell these- have been destroyed. We can help prevent so many casualties in the aftermath of disasters by donating money to the families in need. On our own, we should have supplies of water, food, and first aid kits lest an attack from nature comes to us.
