Why do we have an appendix?

If we can remove your appendix why we all have one anyways?  Read the following article:  What the appendix is good for - Some body parts seem pointless but in fact have purpose, by Emily Sohn.

What is a vestigial organ?  Why do we have an appendix, what does it do?  Why does living in undeveloped ntries versus living in the US matter - what does this have to do with your appendix?  What are some of our other vestigial organs and why do we have them?

  1. The appendix is a vestigial organ. That means that the organ is not needed for your body to function. Some other vestigial organs are the tonsils, wisdom, teeth and body hair. The appendix is a worm like pouch that is four inches long and it is less than 1/2 inches wide. If the doctors know what was causing appendicitis no one would ever get it. There is not really a specific cause it just becomes inflamed, then infected and sometimes, it becomes very swollen and infected and soon enough it bursts.

  2. A vestigial organ is an organ that seems to have no use. The appendix is an excellent place for good bacteria to stay. In undeveloped countries the people get more bacteria in them so they need more good bacteria to kill the bad bacteria. Our ancestors had to have some vestigial structures, like wisdom teeth which would help them because they probably suffered from tooth decay, their tonsils might be another place to house good bacteria, and their spleen stores a large amount of immune cells.

  3. A vestigial organ is an organ with no use today. Scientists have discovered that we have an apendix to store good bacteria and it lets them out when bad bacteria attack. In undeveloped countries the apendix could save you because there are many dieases so having good bacteria stored up could really help you. Here in the United States everything is sterile and it is easy to prevent and fight off dieases so the apendix doesn't help much. Other vestigial organs used to not be pointless like wisdom teeth. When there no dental care teeth got infected more often and wisdom teeth could be a replacement for those teeth. Now since we take good care of our teeth we don't lose alot of teeth so there is no room for wisdom teeth.

  4. A vestigial organ is an organ containing no usage today. The human appendix is a small pouch attached to the large intestine where it joins the small intestine and does not directly assist digestion. Good bacteria is stored inside here and when bad bacteria come inside and attack, the good bacteria will be released. In undeveloped countries, it is good to have and appendix because the bacteria can save your life. We also have wisdom teeth as vestigial organs so when there was no dental care and teeth got infected, these teeth can replace those infected teeth. But today, we now have dental care and we don't lose teeth as much and there is never any room for the wisdom teeth to come in anymore.

  5. A vestigal organ is an organ the body does not have a use for anymore. Some found in the average human body are the spleen, wisdom teeth, tonsils, and the appendix. All of these were useful at some point. Wisdom teeth were used to chew meat in older humans. The tonsils, spleen, and appendix are all thought to have assisted the immune system. The spleen stores immune cells. The appendix acts as a "safe house" for good bacteria which can be sent out to attack bad bacteria. In some undeveloped countries, this extra help to the immune system is needed when things like medicine and clean water aren't aas accessible. The United States is very sterile compared to these other countries and the appendix is not needed to fight infection.

  6. A lot of people think that the appendix has no real use in our body, but they may be surprised to know that it is actually quite beneficial. The appendix actually helps the "good bacteria" with your immune system. Its location and small form make it the perfect hangout for these helpful bacteria. In the U.S., it's true, the appendix is not used very often, but that's only because we live in such a sterilized culture. On the other hand, it is very helpful to those living in developing worlds. When they cannot get to food or clean water or even a clean environment, the bacteria stored in the appendix is put to good use. So although it's not necessary to live with us here, it is in other places and back in the past. So you can't call it a vestigial organ quite yet, like the wisdom teeth, spleen, and finger nails!

  7. A vestigial organ is an organ that we have no use for today. The appendix is a "storage bin" for good bacteria. If bad bacteria attack, good bacteria emerge from the appendix, saving you. In countries where sanitation is poor and bacteria spreads widely, the appendix may potentially save many lives. Wisdom teeth is another example of a vestigial organ. It may have been used to chew and grind raw food many, many years ago.

  8. A vestigal organ is an organ that has no apparent use and which an individual can survive without, such as wisdom teeth, tonsils, and the appendix. Far from being useless, however, the appendix serves as a haven for benign bacteria in the body, and studies have shown that the appendix has evolved more than once throughout the evolutionary process, which suggests that it was an important feature. Wisdom teeth would have been useful to our ancestors, for millions of years ago, humans did not take care of their teeth and would have benefited from an extra set of molars with which to chew their food.

  9. A vestigial organ is an organ that no longer has use in our body. The appendix used to be considered vestigial, but has now been found to be a part of the immune system, by storing "good" bacteria. In developed countries, like the U.S., an extra immune system boost is not needed. But in undeveloped countries, the appendix is needed to protect people from pathogens not seen in the U.S. The spleen has also been found to be a "storehouse", and our wisdom teeth were used by our ancestors as replacement teeth, when their old ones had worn down.

  10. Vestigial organs are those that are not essential in our bodies for survival. The appendix is considered such an organ although recent studies have shown the appendix to serve as a place for "good" bacteria to grow (and later attack "bad," or disease causing, bacteria). Though the appendix has little use to people in the U.S., in other places of the world, where there is little medicine or clean water, the appendix can keep people alive. Vestigial structures are believed to have once been vital when we lived in different circumstances- the same reason the organs are more or less important to people depending on where they live. Some other vestigial organs we have are wisdom teeth (which were beneficial for our larger-mouthed ancestors when eating), and tonsils (which actually are believed to boost the immune system).

  11. Our appendix was a vestigal organ witch is an organ that no longer has a use in our body. But thanks too new technology,Scientists have now realized that the appendix is a part of the immune system. It storesd the good bacteria in our body. The US obviously doesnt need it though because of our medical technology. But in countries that are not as industrialized as us theyneed the appendix to fight off pathogens not known to the us. The spleen also holds good bacteria that our body needs.

  12. The appendix is a pouch that was used to store good bacteria, and when harmful bacteria entered the body the good bacteria would go and attack. Nowadays with everything being mostly clean. The appendix doesn’t do much for the body. The appendix is known as a vestigial organ which means it is an organ that is no longer used today. Another vestigial organ is wisdom teeth. Before we had good dental hygiene teeth would rot and fall out and the wisdom teeth would take the old tooth’s place. Nowadays adult teeth aren’t lost, and there isn’t enough room in peoples mouth for wisdom teeth.

  13. A vestigial organ is a organ that we no longer really need to survive. An Appendix is a holder for the good bacteria that help our immune system fight off disease. Your appendix isn't being used to its fullest in developed countries because we have purified water, and medical care, and it gets infected with bad bacteria. We have wisdom teeth because before we had enough room to have them in our mouth, and the spleen also helps fight off disease along with tonsils.

  14. Humans do not need vestigial organs because they do not help us in any way except cause pain. This is what the appendix is. A vestigial organ. Surprisingly though, bacteria that is good for you grows in it and helps kill bad bacteria. Although this is not important in the U.S. because of all the medicine and sanitary conditions, the appendix can help in less developed countries where people do not have the luxury of man made antibiotics and such and rely on their own body to fight bacteria. Other vestigial organs are the spleen which fights disease and wisdom teeth which helped ancestors with larger mouths eat.
