Are bacteria our new fingerprint?

Read the following article:  The tell-tale bacteria - What germs populate the hands may be as unique as fingerprints by Stephen Ornes.  Relate it to what you have learned earlier this year about bacteria, genetic fingerprints, etc.

What is a microbe fingerprint and how might it be useful?

  1. Microbes, or bacteria, are everywhere. Different types of microbes live on different peoples’ hands. Everyone has their own unique combination of microbes that lives on their skin. With an idea similar to fingerprints, police and investigative workers may be able to trace specific mixes of microbes to people. This system is thought to be effective because microbe fingerprints are difficult to hide. These small but accurate blends of bacteria may be a large step in the world of forensic science.

  2. Scientists say the microbes that live on our hands could be useful in a surprising way: fighting crime. When police visit the scene of a crime, they often look for fingerprints to try to identify the culprit. They can also look for other things, like hair, to figure out who was there. But according to a recent study, investigators could even use microbes to help crack a case. Every person has his or her own set of microbes that live on their hands. That means that if you and your best friend were able to see and compare all the microbes that lived on both of your hands, your hands probably would look different. Some microbes would show up on your hand, while others would live only one your friends hand. Your mix of different kinds of hand microbes is unique. Just like your fingerprint.

  3. Bacteria is a part of us everyday. Bacteria is everywhere. Every human has their own set of microbes that live on their hands. Scientists wanted to know whether this microbe mix could be used as a new kind of fingerprint. They wondered if it would work to catch DNA, especially in a crime scene where fingerprints might be hard to find. For an experiment, scientists compared the bacteria on the hands of three people to the bacteria found on each person’s computer keyboard. The scientists found that they could use the microbe to tell people apart, but since they did it on only 3 different people, it may not be able to work on MANY different criminals. Scientists agree that much more work will need to be completed before the microbe fingerprint will be a useful tool.

  4. A microbe finger print is using forensic science to possible help solve a crime from a crime scene investigation. It finds the bacteria that live on your hand and you can then tell who the person is.

  5. A microbe fingerprint is your unique fingerprint, in investigations this process is called forensics. This useful because the bacteria on your hands can be transmitted to areas you have been. This helps out investigators because your bacteria is so specific to you that it is easy to find you. Forensic scientist have put many criminals in jail for using science and microbes as their evidence.

  6. Microbes are bacteria and can be found all over a person's hand at any point of the day. The microbes found on a person's hand is specific to that person. The microbes are as unique as a human fingerprint which is why they are called a microbe fingerprint. Microbes can help in criminal investigation because they are much easier to find than fingerprints. Fingerprints can smudge but microbes stay on a surface.

  7. There is now a new way to solve cases and find criminals besides the fingerprints and hair. Its the bacteria on your hand. The bacteria on your hand wont come off no matter how many times you wash it so its harder to cover because sometimes a finger print smudge is hard to find. Scientist have tested this new idea on 270 people and it worked nine out of nine times so far this method is promising but there are more than 270 criminals out there.

  8. Microbe fingerprint is like your DNA except this "DNA" can be left anywhere or on anything you have touched. Scientists are now being able to figure out people by using microbe fingerprints. This would be useful in crime scenes to discover who was responsible for the crime. Scientists have tested this on 270 people and were succesfully able to tell every person's bacteria. No matter how many times you wash you're hands or put hand sanatizer, you can not get rid of all your bacteria. They will give you away in any crime scene, even your hair.

    Like fingerprints and DNA, people may have a nearly unique set of bacteria that live on their hands, according to researchers in the United States.Our bodies have hundreds of bacterial species just on the skin, so it made sense that they would fall off at crime scenes.microbe fingerprints is a mixture of bacterial and its useful because it can help investigators find the crimnals.

  10. Everyone has microbes living on their hands. Not all microbes are bad, but each person has a specific set of microbes. Scientists have been experimenting with people and the microbes on their hands and every time, the end result was that the they were able to specify every person's microbes and bacteria on their hands. Later scientists tested some keyboards and the results were the same.

Fingerprints smudge and it gets harder for a investigator, to identify the fingerprint, where as microbes they can never smudge and are reliable.Also,scientist have tested this new idea on 270 people and it worked nine out of nine times.
