“Which made the chicken, the hormone or the gene?”

Read the following article:  Half rooster, half hen - Study of special chickens suggests new thinking on hormones and gender by Stephen Ornes.  Discuss the role of hormones and genetics on determination of sex.

  1. Much controversy with Chickens is if they are male or female. Some chickens seem to be both. One half of each chicken has thicker legs and bulging muscles like a male rooster. The other half consists of thinner legs and darker feathers like a female hen. In a study from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh showed that individual cells in some chickens have their own sexual identities, which appear in both male and female chickens. Derek McBride, a scientist, found male and female cells scattered around in all parts in a chickens body. Although, one side of each chicken was dominated by genetically male cells and the other side was dominated by genetically female cells. Researchers say hormones are not determining cells gender traits as much as genetics were, but it is still questionable. Art Arnold who is a genetisist believes it is time for scientists to change the way they think about hormones and genes.

  2. Scientists have been suggesting ideas to answer the question of how sex is determined in animals. Some say that hormones control the sex. A more accurate idea may be that genes in specialized cells determine the sex of an organism. Experiments with half male half female chickens proved that cells throughout the body are either male or female. Though the animal was exposed to the same hormone by all cells, the cells became either male or female on their own. These experiments with chickens demonstrate that genes determine the sex of birds and mammals, rather than hormones.

  3. There has been a long debate among scientists on what determines an animal's sex. The theory that hormones, chemicals released throughout the body, decide this had been longstanding- however, new research indicates that it is likely genes that determine sex. Because each cell is individually male or female, it is indicated that it is the genes that are inside of the cell that decide this. This is further supported as all of the cells in the body- whether male or female- are exposed to the same hormones. When the sexual mix is very distinct, it is because the is a larger, more separate concentration of male/female cells in certain places. Though the theory that hormones decide sex has worked for many years, it is likely that genes are in fact responsible for that decision.

  4. Many scientist have been spectacle about the sex of chickens. Several scientist and researchers think hormones set the sex of a chicken and others say that genetics are responsible for the sex. After experiments and research McBride and his colleagues concluded that a cells genes have much more a way in on the sex of a chicken. They also discovered that a cell in a bird can become either male or female on its own. Many other animals are like chickens in this way and are called gynandromorphs.

  5. Many scientist are getting interested in the half gender chickens called gynandomorphs. They want to study these chickens to help determine what makes animals male or female. Some scientist say that gender is determined by the cells and the genes contain. After all, cells are the smallest building blocks in animals and contain the "instruction book for life" or genetic information.

  6. Scientists have always been studying how animals determine their gender. Recently, scientists have gathered double-gendered chickens to find out more about the topic. Before, hormones were thought to be the sex decider. However, further research has shown that it is actually genetics. Each individual cell has genes that show whether or not the cell is male or female. Though it is still not confirmed, it seems that genetics is the deciding factor.

  7. Since the discovery of cells scientists have been studying this magnificent living things that are like the book of life. Now in 2010, scientists have discover that chickens and other mammals can be both male or female depending on their genes. They studied three different birds and they all have male and female cells. They said that one half of their bodies were mainly male cells and the other half was female cells. Scientists thought that this was the hormones acting but it turns out that some genes just pick for themselves which sexual identity they are.

These chickens have been shedding critical brand new light on how birds, and maybe reptiles, develop. It used to be suspicion which hormones educated cells to rise in masculine or female-specific ways.It equates to a half-and-half duck will have all opposite plumage, physique shape, and flesh make up on the dual halves of the body.It even affects the wattles on the bird’s head, and the spurs on the legs. They will be incomparable on the rooster half, and not as big on the hen half, of the same bird.

  9. Scientists have done research on whether genes or hormones cause gender in an animal. They used chickens that had both male and female cells in them, they found out that hormones do not the cause of gender of an animal. The genetics themselves are the cause of gender.

  11. Many scientists have been interested in the way gender is determined in development of certain animals. Research was done on the half-male half-female chickens. It was thought that gender was determined by hormones, when, in fact, it is determined by genetics in individual cells. If one side of the bird is dominated by male cells, then it will develop male, and if the other is dominated by a majority of female cells, then that side will be female.

  12. Scientists believed that hormones are the key to determining the sex of chickens. However a new theory has been made and it is actually the genes in the chicken that determine the sex. Evidence of this is that some chickens appear to be both male and female. One half of their body has male cells and the other half has female cells in it. So the chicken is in a way, a transvestite. The chickens that are both sexes are called gynandromorphs.
