The Battle for Biodiversity

Read the following article Hawaii: Model in the Battle for Biodiversity by Jon Letman.  What is biodiversity?  What is an endemic species?  Invasive species?  Why are non-native species such a problem?  Why is loss of biodiversity a global problem?  How is Hawaii a model?  What can we do?

  1. Biodiversity is the variety of plants and animals in an ecosystem. When invasive, or non-native species are introduced into an environment, they compete with the indigenous population for a limited source or resources. Sometimes, the non-native species take up so much of these resources that the indigenous population struggles to survive. Sometimes these invasive species can even cause native species to go extinct. When this happens, the habit undergoes an unfortunate loss of biodiversity.

  2. Biodiversity is the variation of life forms within a given ecosystem, biome, or on the entire Earth. Endemic species are especially likely to develop on islands because of their geographical isolation. A Non-native Species is generally defined as an organism peculiar to a specific area, which can cause environmental, ecological and economic impact with their introduction; or alternatively an organism occupying places beyond its historic range, colonizing ecosystems from which it has been absent all along. Non-native species can be either beneficial or malevolent, but most have a status that is largely ambiguous; most crops and livestock that have circumglobal ranges are non-native species, and are economically beneficial to humans. Scientists say biodiversity is facing its greatest threat in millions of years, with three species dying out every hour. Biodiversity loss has negative effects on several aspects of human well-being, such as food security, vulnerability to natural disasters, energy security, and access to clean water and raw materials.

  3. The biodiversity in Hawaii has suffered a great loss. This year people are trying to help sustain the biodiversity in Hawaii.Biodiversity is the variety of plants and animals in an ecosystem. Ever since people colonized the island, the islands have been lost many species. When invasive, or non-native species are introduced into an environment, they compete with the for the limited or resources. People should become aware of this great loss of biodiversity in Hawaii.

  4. The biodiversity in many parts of the world, including Hawaii, has been slowly dyeing away. Biodiversity is the variety of all life forms, the different plants and animals and micro-organisms. The endemic species, species that is native to a specific geographic region, is facing a major threat in Hawaii because they cannot adapt to novel environments, such as the invasive species do.

  5. Biodiversity is the variety of life in an ecosystem that is an important global issue today, especially in Hawaii. An endemic species develops from geographic isolation and there and more and more endemic species in Hawaii. Invasive species adapts to environments and survive better than native species. Biodiversity in Hawaii is threatened by non-native species. Hawaii is a future model for what is going to happen to our planet.

  6. Biodiversity is the variety of plant and animal species in an ecosystem. When both invasive and non-invasive species enter into an ecosystem, they end up competing for the resources already used by native species. In some cases, populations of invasive species become so overpopulated that they win the competition over resources fought against the native species. This results in struggle to survive and even extinction in many cases. Hawaii is an accurate model of biodiversity because there are many non-native species being introduced, creating a major threat of native wildlife.

  7. Biodiversity includes the different species of plants and animals in an ecosystem. Endemic species are species that grow in only one part of the world. Invasive and non-native species are a threat because they end up taking the resources used by the native species. This causes the loss of a certain species to a non-native species. The loss of biodiversity will cause species that inadvertently help other species to disappear. When this happens the species that were being helped will also eventually disappear. By reducing the introduction of new and non-native species, biodiversity will stay constant and get rid of potntial loss of native species.
