Oil Spill!

Read the following New York Times article.  And look at the map on the page.  What caused the spill?  How big is it?  When will it hit land?  Why are they burning the oil?  What affect will this have on the enviornment?

  1. The oil spill happened off the gulf og Mexico. The spill happened on April 20th. What happened was workers were drilling rig. There was an explosion and a fire. The effect that the oil spill will have on the enviorment is it will effect the animal in the water. The oil spill causes pollution.

  2. There was an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20th. Workers were drilling in the ocean and there was a massive explosion that sent the oil into the Gulf. Scientists were wrong about how much it was leaking: They previously thought 1000 barrels were being dumped but it is closer to 5000 barrels each day. The oil spill will definitely cause environmental damage to both the sea and land habitats when the spill hits the coast.

  3. A oil spill on the gulf of mexico is leaking close to 5000 barrels everyday. The explosion took place on April 20. A fire on a drilling rig left 11 workers missing and some were said to be dead. The rig sank two days later. What is even worse is that officials had found two leaks in a riser, a 5,000-foot-long pipe. It connected the rig to the wellhead and is now detached and snaking along the sea floor. On wednesday a cleanup crew began an in-situ burn. They try corralling concentrated parts of the spill in a 500-foot-long fireproof boom, moving it to another location. After, they burn it.

  4. On April 20th, 2010, an explosion and fire on a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico caused the death of 11 workers and two oil leaks, leading to a spill. Just Wednesday, April 28,2010, a third leak was discovered, proclaimed newly punctured by officials. The rate of the leak is an estimation of 5,000 barrels of oil day, five times more than the original estimation of 1,000 barrels a day. The spill is huge, and winds are beginning to push the oil towards the coasts of Louisiana. Because of the many dangers that the spill poses, clean up crews decided to use a method called in-situ burn to clean up the oil. This process consists of corralling concentrated parts of the spill in a 500-foot-long fireproof boom, moving it to another location, and burning it. This process has been successful, and to try and close the leaking valve, officials are using the blowout preventer. Because the spill was light, using the blowout preventer will not be as environmentally damaging as usual.

  5. There is a huge oil spill in the gulf of Mexico. There were several kinks in the pipeline that descended into the ocean floor. while workers were digging in the rig there was a huge explosion. They expect the oil to reach the shores of Louisiana by Friday. The oil spill itself is huge, it was noticed by people when they fly over it. One of the solutions is the isolate the spill and burn it. there are ecologic problems with that because they would be releasing a lot of Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. They also don't know if weather will be on their side. they also talked about a possibility being that they put a dome over the whole thing but it would be to be huge to reach the ocean floor. Plus it would take long to build it

  6. On April 20th, 2010 a explosion and fire on a drilling rig left 11 workers dead. Two days later the rig sank, it sank 50 miles off the Louisiana coast. Soon as it started to sink oil began to flow out. The oil is leaking out at about 5,000 barrels a day, not 1,000 as had been estimated. The oil is coming from a leak that is at 5,000 feet below the surface. Cleanup crews began conducting an in-situ burn, which is when they burn the oil off the top of the water they do this by reaching a 500-foot-long fireproof boom, lighting the oil and than moving. The oil only burns when it is thick enough, it is thought that 97% of the oil spilled is now a water - oil mixture, which only makes the cleaning up process even more hard.

  7. Off the Gulf of Mexico there is a massive oil leak. When there was an explosion on an oilrig, the rig sank. This caused a major leak to occur. Scientists estimate that the broken pipes leak about 5,000 barrels of oil a day into the ocean. Right now, official are working extremely hard to prevent the oil spill from reaching the coasts. 100,000 feet of protective booms have been put in place as a barrier for the shorelines. If the oil were to reach the coasts it would be disastrous for the costal ecosystem. Bp, the drilling company, is legally responsible for the coasts of the clean up. They are trying many different ways to combat against the oil spill. They have tried burning the oil to get rid of it. Officials say that that has been successful. Scientists estimate that the spill will reach the shores along the gulf coast Friday….

  8. There was an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on ?April 20, 2010. There was an expolsion when a ship was drilling for oil in that area. The ship sunk 2 days later. In this process, 11 people have been reported missing and the amount of oil that has been leaking has increased by 5,000 barrels of oil! They are still in the process of cleaning up this spill. It is dearly imortant for them to clean the oil spill up as fast as possible, because the oceanic animals are in huge threat. The animals cannot swim as quickly through the thick oil and can possibly die from this accident.

  9. The oil spill happened on April 20th when workers were drilling for oil their was an explosion causing a fire, deaths, and a massive oil leak. The estimated amount of oil is 1,000 barrels a day leaked out. The oil spill might reach land by Friday night because of the wind. They are burning the oil because it has been proven that it eliminates it. The envoirnment will suffer greatly and many animals will die as a result.

  10. The oil spill on the gulf of Mexico has been spewing out close to 5500 gallons of oil every 24 hours. The boom took place on 4/20/10. A fire on a drilling rig left 11 workers missing and some were said to be dead. The rig sank couple days later. What is even worse is that officials had found two leaks in a riser, a 5,000-foot-long pipe. It connected the rig to the wellhead and is now detached and snaking along the sea floor. On Wednesday a cleanup crew began an to burn the oil in hope that it would help the animal steer clear and rid the water of oil. They try corralling concentrated parts of the spill in a 500-foot-long fireproof boom, moving it to another location. After, they burn it.

  11. On April 20th an oil spill happened in the Gulf of Mexico. While workers were drilling the rig an explosion took place, causing the death of 11 people. It was previously estimated that 1,000 barrels of oil had been leaking a day, but they found out it was really 5,000 barrels a day. With the oil spill, it will make it harder for fishes to move and they will be contaminated with toxins, consequently causing death of the contaminated species.

  12. on April 20th, in the Gulf of Mexico, a giant oil spill occurred. It was cause by a big explosion which sent the pipe into the gulf. It is estimated that about 5,000 barrels of oil a day are being spilled into the water. To clean up the spill, they burn the oil so that they can get rid of it. The oil is bad for the environment because it poisons the fish and kill bird that get stuck in it.

  13. An explosion and fire on a drilling rig on April 20th sank the ship, leaving eleven workers missing. The oil slick was about 16 miles off of the Mississippi River Delta, off the coast of Louisiana. The first time it actually hit land was on Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. They are burning the oil to see how far out the oil goes and how much oil there is in the gulf. Many animals living in the ocean will die because the oil is too thick in the water and they might get trapped inside it. It will also affect our birds because oil can get stuck in their feathers, making it harder to fly.

  14. The drilling rig that was in the water sank due to an explosion that was the cause of the eleven workers death. Everyday as the oil spill is still unsealed about 42,000 gallons of oil is leaked out into the water everyday. The oil has reached the Mississippi River which leads to the ocean but was blocked off before. New ideas to seal the leak was tested and some could take for two to three weeks or a month to be tested further on. The most successful way of doing that was found to be a in-sintu burn which was taking about five hundred square feet of water and burning the oil mixture which happened to be successful. Another way was the blowout preventer which happened to be also successful but may fail due to already a lot of oil has already came out. If this problem is not fixed it can affect our economy greatly because we depend on our oil so much and here it is freely spilling into the gulf water where it can also affect the marine life underwater changing their food chain.

  15. An explosion in the water caused a drilling rig to sink which took eleven workers deaths.Everyday 1000 gallons of oil seeps into the water. Luckily the mississippi was closed off before the oil could get that far. even though some testing for some techniques to seal the oil spill leaks could take up to a month, we should keep exploring our other options. Especially because it is a huge threat to the animals that have been trapped in this gooey mess.

  16. There were many oil spills, but the one in the Gulf of Mexico happened by an accident by Exxon Valdez. Another spill was caused by the explosion that went underground; it was an explosion and fire on a drilling rig, the rig sank 2 days later. The spill is estimated to be 5,000 feet deep and is also been estimated that the leaking rate is 5,000 barrels a day. The wind pattern may push the spill into the coast of Lousiana as soon as Friday night. They used a technique called an in-situ burn, which they are hoping it will consist in corralling concentrated parts of the oil. It is said to be a good thing and hardly anymore damage if the clean out at least 50 percent of it.
