Will we stop drilling for oil?

Why do we drill for oil?  What do we use oil for?  Read the article Oil's hidden costs visible, but will it matter? by Seth Borenstein.  Why do we drill offshore rather than on land?  What are some alternative types of energy?  What are the costs of the current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?

  1. Oil is drilled for fuel and electricity generation. People drill offshore because the places on shore do not produce as much anymore. Other alternatives than oil are solar power, thermal, and wind powered. Many people don't use these because they are expensive and have not come along very far. The cost for the oil spill right now is $ 1.6 billion dollars.

  2. The oil spill gives a wake-up call to the world to see what the problems are. Up until recently, fossil fuels were being burnt left and right without people caring. Now, however, people can see that burning these substances are only half of the problem. The damage of just drilling for oil is almost as great as having all that oil be burnt by cars and power plants.

  3. Everyone wants power and gas for their cars and homes. So the oil industry has to dig or drill in new spots in order to find and obtain more oil. New areas have been found offshore in the oceans that are rich with oil but are dangerous to both the workers and the environment. The recent oil spill near Louisiana is a wake up call that we need to switch to safer, cleaner, and more efficient power sources, such as Solar Power,Thermal Power, Nuclear Power, and Wind Power. However these sources of energy cost quite the pretty penny so people are reluctant to transfer over.

  4. Now there is not as much oil resources on land so oil companies are drilling off shore. This has caused a major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This oil spill has not only cost 1.6 billion dollars but it has environmental harm. It could destroy the wetlands of Louisiana. There are alternatives to oil like battery energy but the alternative options are very expensive.

  5. I think we won't stop drilling oil because every one is addicted to it and want it more and more. We drill oil because we need it for every day things like using it as gas for cars, electricity for energy,etc..We drill it offshore rather than on land because it can affect us in a deadly matter, the animals ,and all living things on land. There really isn't much of an alternative type of energy but there is a transition to renewable and battery technology and hydrocarbon that is much less risky today. The current costs of oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is $1.6 billion

  6. Since most oil resources on land have been used up, we have turned to drilling offshore. This is very risky because oil spills cause great harm to sensitive ocean ecosystems and wildlife. There are other energy sources besides oil, but they are more expensive. People are hesitant to switch to alternative energy sources because of that. Hopefully after the Gulf oil spill people will realize that saving the Earth is more important than saving a few bucks by using fossil fuels and not environmentally friendly energy sources.

  7. We drill for oil because we use it for energy. America and the rest of the world are addicted to it. We are now drilling offshore rather than on land because we are running out of places to drill. Alternative types of energy are renewable and battery technology. The current cost of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is $1.6 billion.

  8. Drilling offshore is very dangerous and what happened contributes to that. The total cost due to the oil spill is 1.6 billion dollars. We depend on oil and coal so much that we do not try to find alternatives to using it. When the oil spill happened it gave us a clear image of how life would be like if kept using the oil as energy. Oil would be more expensive as to four dollars a gallon and our earth would have more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to the constant burning of it and coal which is already bringing on the global warming issue. People are trying to find a much better way to use oil as to using less of it and more natural and friendly resources.

  9. Because we dont have very many oil resources, we have started to drill off shore. This is not a smart decision that some peeople have made because it can cause damage to rare and important life underwater. Since we are constantly trying to look for oil resources we dont even stop and take a moment to think about how it could be harming other important ecosystems. If we keep using the same amount of oil, more carbon dioxcide will be realeased into the atmosphere which can cause more global warning conserns.
