Shade grown coffee

We have talked about the importance of biodiversity and the effects of habitat loss on species.  We have also discussed bird migration.  Birds depend on different habitats all over the world - most birds don't stay in the same habitat year round.  Many birds that we are familiar with in the summer migrate south in the winter - and they spend their time on coffee plantations.  Read the following article:  Why Migratory Birds are Crazy for Coffee.   Why do they stay on shade grown coffee plantations?  What are the benefits of shade grown coffee?  What are some of the issues with sun grown coffee plantations?  How does it affect birds?  What can you do to help?

  1. Migrating birds like shade coffee plantations because the shade trees shade them from the sun and other weather. Also the shade coffee plantations do not require as much pesticides. Sun grown coffee plantations require year round work and a great deal of pesticides. Also they can cause soil erosion and large amounts of toxin run off. Birds will migrate to habitats that are maintained and clean and when these habitats are ruined by sun grown coffee plantations they will have no where to migrate. I will buy coffee from shade grown coffee plantations.

  2. Traditional coffee plantations, or shade coffee, can be a home to as many as 150 bird species. This is nearly as many as some rain forests do. In recent years, however, less and less shade plantations exist, because sun grown coffee is quicker and results in a bigger harvest. These practices are not sustainable, and require large amounts of fertilizer to keep going. The mein cause for this change in style of growing is because the price of coffee collapsed, and countries that relied on it needed to step up production to keep the necessary money coming in.

  3. Birds over 150 different species migrate to sun grown coffee plantations. These coffee plantations are habitats that are threatend. Since so many different kinds of birds are supported by these naturally made coffee plantations means that if these plantations where to be cut done or demolished then all these migratory birds that are used to coming here will be without a home. The benefits of shade grown coffee is that they protect the understory coffee plants from rain and sun. They also help maintain soil quality, reduce the need for weeding, and aid in pest control. What i can do to help is to not drink alot of coffee and encourage my parents not to either because then theses plantations will be preserved.
